Perth in Western Australia is home to some of country’s best group races with racing conducted by Perth Racing and the major meets held at two metropolitan clubs.

Ascot Racecourse is the primary racing venue for the Perth races, while Belmont Park Racecourse is the other major track in WA.

The biggest thoroughbred racing event in Perth is held in the summer season with the Ascot Summer Racing Carnival lighting up the track from late October until New Years Day annually.

Perth Summer Racing Carnival

The Ascot Summer Racing Carnival kicks off with the running of the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) on the final Saturday of October each year.

Throughout the carnival a total of 12 Group races take place including the richest race in WA, the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in late November.

As part of the Ascot Summer Racing Carnival, the Festival of Perth Racing takes centre stage over three huge race days in November and December.

Railway Stakes Day is the opening Festival of Perth Racing meeting and is followed by the $750,000 Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) the next Saturday.

The Festival concludes on the first Saturday in December with Kingston Town Classic Day, when the second Group 1 Perth summer race takes place, the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).

Other highlights over the summer holiday racing scene in Perth include the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m) and the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m), the Perth Cup key to the New Years’ Day celebrations at Ascot every year.

Perth Autumn Racing Carnival

The other feature racing carnival held in WA is during the autumn and centres around the running of the Group 1 WATC Derby (2400m) in April.

Other Group races held at Ascot during the autumn season include the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m), the Group 3 WA Oaks (2400m) for fillies and the Group 3 WATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).

Perth Winter Races

Belmont Park is used for all of Perth’s winter racing and hosts two Group races, the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) in late May and the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) in June.
