The elite summer racing action of the Festival of Perth Racing kicks off this Saturday, November 20, with Ascot Racecourse hosting the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m).
Set to be contested by a quality field of local and interstate gallopers, the 2010 Railway Stakes is the richest race held in Western Australia each year and provides one of the best betting markets available to punters!
Colour Correct is the pronounced favourite in the Railway Stakes odds at Luxbet, the in-form six-year-old coming off back-to-back stakes wins at the track and currently paying $4.80 to make it a hat trick on Saturday.
Trusting is the second elect in the betting markets for the million dollar showdown, John Thompson’s Sydney raider coming off an eye-catching fifth to Wall Street in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington and has remained stable at $6.50 to win the Railway Stakes.
Sniper’s Bullet is the only other Railway Stakes hopeful at single figure odds, the defending champion drawn out wide in barrier 13 and set to carry a hefty 58kg, making them a risk at $9.
There is lots of value to be found in the Railway Stakes markets this year with a number of hopefuls able to cause an upset at juicy odds through Luxbet including last start winner of the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes (1500m) God Has Spoken paying $10, fellow Neville Parnham-trained local Tarzi who placed second to Sniper’s Bullet last year at a generous quote of $16 after drawing wide, and consistent four-year-old mare For Your Eyes Only ($21) coming off a third to Famous Roman in the Lee Steer Stakes.
Famous Roman is also backing up with a run in the Railway Stakes on Saturday and is in the same boat as the favourite Colour Correct seeking three wins on the trot.
Despite Famous Roman’s brilliant form of late, punters have been sceptical to get behind the Jim Taylor-trained six-year-old after they were nearly scratched from the race and banned from racing for three months after their Lee Steere win when they were found to have bled post-race.
Stewards, however, couldn’t prove the bleeding attack wasn’t caused from external trauma and allowed them into the Railway Stakes field.
Set to run as Race 7 at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday afternoon, the 2010 Carlton Draught Railway Stakes is due to jump at 6:45pm (AEDST).
